Specialist restoration of period front doors
Our philosophy is simple. Each door is unique, each has its history, each has its own special character and needs. Whether it's a question of cheap, cheerful, or top-notch, it all depends on the door. After many years as a time served carpenter, I have made and mended them all and there's no wiser way to put it. So what does it mean for you and your money?
Generally, your existing front door is of a far superior quality to anything you can buy off the shelf nowadays and so mending and restoring it with timber of the same superior quality is the key to a robust, resilient repair. The result, a door that can withstand the elements for the next one hundred years. For example, most period doors from the 18th and 19th century are made of Baltic, oak and elm. All three are strong hearty woods. At Oldwoods we know that in order to be completely successful with a repair, we need to use timber of the same family which is around the same age. To put it succinctly, you can't repair a silk purse without silk. Our timber store dates back to the seventeen hundreds. This is the key to a successful door restoration.
